What causes pressure in the upper back of the throat? It is a constant pressure which does not go away. Sometimes I have cough and feeling like I'm drowning. I'm taking medication to control panic attacks, but doesn't seem to be helping. My doctor examined my throat and said everything was perfectly.

Many things can cause this feeling. Most of the time is due to acid reflux in the throat. You may have symptoms of acid in the throat without experiencing normal esophageal symptoms of indigestion or heartburn. Many times we can not determine what happens, even after an assessment conducting various tests. I think many of these symptoms could be caused by muscle tension in many of the muscles that control the throat and neck. Tension may cause a feeling of pressure. These feelings are often exaggerated in people with anxious personalities. This will not improve with typical remedies for heartburn.
