Almost everyone experiences benign and transient muscle tics occasionally. These tics are usually the result of stress, lack of sleep, over-use of specific muscle group and usually disappear within a day or two. Persistent muscle twitches can be caused by several reasons, including mineral or electrolyte imbalances (eg hypocalcemia), autoimmune diseases, side effects of certain drugs (your contraceptive pill may play a role in this problem), and certain neurological disorders ( eg amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Since it has been experiencing tics for quite some time, and considering the additional symptoms of muscle pain, in this case a medical evaluation is required. If you have not already, call your doctor.
