Stress, anxiety and depression are all physiological effects - including, in some people, stomach / gastritis irritation. An antidepressant can be recommended for the treatment of anxiety and depression (caused by "stress") - waiting for other physiological responses (antral gastritis) are attenuated. So it is not a direct effect, but with others, it can prove to be a powerful intervention.
