Constipation happens when someone defecates very hard stools. A person can go to the bathroom one day every other, but if the stool is soft, it is not constipation. Hard stools are difficult to pass through the gut, and can be treated with increased fluid intake and fiber. Diarrhea happens when someone has very watery stools and more than 3-5 times a day. It could be caused by an infection, diet or other causes.
